Brickhill Christian Centre, Bedford, is one of several modern churches we have worked on. Here, our award winning design extended the original 1960s building (above, left) to increase its capacity by changing the plan from a polygon to a circle, the form recommended for churches by the Rennaissance architect Palladio (above, right), with a glazed entrance screen and twin columns, a reference to the design of the biblical Temple. Responding to the Modern movement style of the original building, we re-used the original laminated timber structure to support the new roof, adding new radial beams and clerestorey lighting ro create a dramatic 'floating' roof.
The scheme also included a new entrance hall,
classrooms and offices, extending the main hall, re-roofing and disability access provisions.
