Stables Conversion

Before... ...and after refurbishment

Stables and other disused farm buildings can often be conserved and refurbished to provide accommodation, for example as holiday cottages providing income. In this example, Robin Kent Architecture & Conservation converted a category B listed stable range dating from the late eighteenth century into a private dwelling, keeping the layout of the original loose boxes, window and door openings. Even the dung pits (cleaned out!) were incorporated in the design as a decked terrace area. The design also preserves historic features such as the 'nibbled' dividing posts from the horse stalls (reused as a characterful stair newel-see below). Maple flooring and sealed softwood facings and doors help to maintain a traditional rural cottage atmosphere, while high insulation, a condensing boiler and woodburning stove ensure modern standards of comfort and sustainability.
