Marchmont Doocot
Despite its superficially good condition, our report showed that this category B listed doocot required urgent conservation work to save it from accelerating decay due to roof leakage, which resulted in repairs to ensure its survival. Our historic research, which led to its listing being upgraded making it eligible for grants, showed that it had probably been designed by the important Scottish architect William Adam (1750-60), to act as an eyecatcher and focal point in views from Marchmont House. Marchmont was the historic seat of the Earls of Marchmont, and part of the largest historic estate in Berwickshire, one of Scotland's most impressive and beautiful designed landscapes. The designed landscape also includes views of Polwarth Church, and Hume Castle, other buildings we have helped to preserve.
