The Johnstone Mausoleum
Designed by Robert and James Adam in 1789 for John Johnstone, first laird of Alva (d.1795), and his wife Caroline (d.1778), the mausoleum is believed to be one of the first examples in Renaissance Europe of the use of the Greek Doric Order, as well as one of the best mausolea in Scotland and the main structure in Alva churchyard, the church having been demolished in 1985. The conservation audit carried out by Robin Kent Architecture & Conservation identified a number of urgent repairs and restoration works to ensure its survival and inform the conservation of the monument, which have benefitted the local community and tourism. Other monuments inspected included Newmills Doocot and Windmill doocot. |
