Alloa Glebe Conservation Area, Alloa

Spacious roadway with fine views out of the area to the Ochils

Alloa is built on a lower coal measure ridge overlooking the River Forth, and is consequently an historic centre for the coal mining, textile, brewing and glassmaking industries, in addition to being the county town of Clackmannanshire. The Alloa Glebe Conservation Area covers much of the western part of the town centre, representing the Georgian and Victorian residential expansion of the town from the key period of industrial growth. It was designated in 1972 and includes 35 listed buildings.

Our conservation area character appraisal included researching the archaeological and historical development of the area and illustrating it on developmental maps like thoise below. The appraisal also included recommendations for management and boundary changes to safeguard the special character of the area from incremental erosion by replacement windows and other damaging alterations, to maintain property values and the sense of local community and identity.
