Alloa is built on a lower coal measure ridge overlooking the River Forth, and is consequently an historic centre for the coal mining, textile, brewing and glassmaking industries, in addition to being the county town of Clackmannanshire. The Alloa Glebe conservation area covers much of the western part of the town centre, representing the Georgian and Victorian residential expansion of the town from the key period of industrial growth. It was designated in 1972 and includes 35 listed buildings. In addition to researching its archaeological and historical development, which we illustrated on our usual developmental maps (below), our report made recommendations for management and boundary changes to safeguard the special character of the area from incremental erosion by replacement windows and other alterations.
