Clackmannan Conservation Area
The tower of Clackmannan's Tolbooth is all that remains of the historic building, standing in the centre of the medieval market place adjacent to the ancient market Cross and Stone of Manau, which form the historic focus of the Clackmannan Conservation Area. Above this ancient tribal capital and county town, on King's Seat Hill, stands the spectacular Clackmannan Tower, an important castle associated with Robert the Bruce and his descendants, yet not even open to visitors. The conservation area appraisal and management review carried out by Robin Kent Architecture & Conservation highlighted the heritage significance of the market place monuments and the well preserved medieval plan of the town, and recommended that Historic Scotland should take steps to realise the considerable potential of the tower to encourage the long overdue economic regeneration of the area.
