Dollar Conservation Area

Academy Place with the Academy and Ochil hills beyond

The attractive New Town of Dollar was developed around William Playfair's fine Neo-Classical Academy of 1818-20 and comprises the main body of the town today, but the Dollar Conservation Area also includes the Old Town, mentioned as early as 877, as well as the picturesque Dollar Burn which previously supported local industries such a woolen mill and a bleaching works. Now mainly residential, the conservation area (designated in 1973) has more than 87 listed buildings.

The conservation area appraisal and management review by Robin Kent Architecture & Conservation identified several character sub-areas, as well as the special contribution made by trees and open spaces, and reviewed the boundaries. The consultancy subsequently advised the Council in a local planning inquiry, resulting in the Council's decision being upheld.
