Academy Place with the Academy and Ochil hills beyond

The attractive New Town of Dollar was developed around William Playfair's fine Neo-Classical Academy of 1818-20 and comprises the main body of the town today, but the conservation area also includes the Old Town, mentioned as early as 877, as well as the picturesque Dollar Burn, which previously supported local industries such a woolen mill and a bleaching works. Now mainly residential, the conservation area (designated in 1973) has more than 87 listed buildings. Our report identified several character sub-areas, as well as the special contribution made by trees and open spaces, and we have subsequently advised the Council in a planning inquiry submission, resulting in the planning decision being upheld.
