Muckhart Conservation Area

The wide main street was ideal for cattle herding

Muckhart is an historic highland cattle droving village dating from the 15th century. Rebuilt after being burnt by the Earl of Montrose in 1644, the oldest dated building is the inn of 1804 (above).

Our report recommending designation of the Muckhart Conservation Area included reproductions of historic postcards alongside photographs taken from the same viewpoints to show how little the townscape had changed. Sketches were prepared to demonstrate typical features that are important to the special character and appearance of the village, while historic map regression was used to illustrate its development. Maps were also used to show listed buildings, open spaces, significant trees and views, and the proposed boundaries of the new conservation area.
