Fountain in front of Clachain House

The planned mill town of Balfron at the edge of the Endrick Valley was an important early industrial centre for spinning and weaving. The 'factory village' established in 1789 to serve the large water mill is ranged downhill from the Clachan or old town on the edge of Balgair Moor. It originally comprising over a hundred 2-storey houses, unusual large for the date in Scotland. After the industry declined due to the use of power looms many of the original houses were demolished, but some original structures remain, and many other features of historic interest. Our report on the conservation area recommended further study to identify these, as well as a range of streetscape improvements and new developments informed by clear guidelines to strengthen the character of the conservation area.
