Balfron Conservation Area
The planned mill town of Balfron at the edge of the Endrick Valley, in Stirlingshire, was an important early industrial centre for spinning and weaving. The 'factory village' established in 1789 to serve the large water mill is ranged downhill from the Clachan or old town on the edge of Balgair Moor. It originally comprising over a hundred 2-storey houses, unusual large for the date in Scotland. After the industry declined due to the use of power looms, many of the houses were demolished, but some original structures remain, and many other features of historic and archaeological interest. The conservation area appraisal of the Balfron conservation area carried out by Robin Kent Architecture & Conservation recommended further study to identify features of interest, as well as a range of streetscape improvements and new developments informed by clear guidelines to strengthen the character of the conservation area and enhance the experience of residents and visitors.
