Sited on a ridge, or druim, Drymen is the origin of the name Drummond. Our conservation area character appraisal of this historic and attractive Highland town contributed to the creation of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, the town being an important base for outdoor activities in the park area. A meeting place for cattle drovers, in 1767 its spacious green market place was the site of no less than eight annual fairs as well as a weekly cattle market. The town is associated with Rob Roy McGregor, and also the birthplace of Eric Liddell, the Olympic athlete whose story is told in the film 'Chariots of Fire'. |
