Scottish Baronial Mansion
This Scottish baronial style mansion was designed in 1841 by William Burn (1789-1870) to replace an earlier Georgian mansion house. We designed internal alterations to upgrade the Victorian kitchen and form offices in the wing, going on to design new garden walls and gates. As part of this we carried out archival historic research to estabish the line of the original drive and the original entrance gates, which provided a basis for restoring the drive and designing new main gates (below), opening the way for new development in part of the grounds. Other improvements in which we advised included restoration and sympathetic extension of gardeners' cottages, and designing an extension to the late Victorian gate lodge to enhance the appearance and value of the estate. Proposed 'new' developments and alterations are frequently found to reflect previous arrangements, which is why we always carry out basic historic research to provide a context for out proposals.
