Scottish Baronial Mansion

The mansion house

This Scottish baronial style mansion was designed in 1841 by William Burn (1789-1870) to replace an earlier Georgian mansion house. Robin Kent Architecture & Conservation designed internal alterations to upgrade the Victorian kitchen and form offices in the wing, going on to design new garden walls and gates. As part of this, the consultancy carried out historic research which estabished the line of the original drive and the location of the original entrance gates, and this provided a basis for restoring the drive and designing new main gates (below), enabling development of part of the grounds for housing. Other improvements to the estate in which the consultancy advised included restoration and sympathetic extension of gardeners' cottages, and designing an extension to the late Victorian gate lodge to enhance the appearance and value of the estate.

Proposed 'new' developments and alterations are frequently found to reflect previous arrangements, which is why we always carry out basic historic research to provide a context for out proposals.
