Inner Temple Conservation Area
The Inner Temple area in the City of London, centred on the Temple Church founded by the medieval order of Knights Templar and now important as one of the Inns of Court, has changed little since the Great Fire of London in 1666, when the open space of the Temple formed the western boundary of destruction. An important city conservation area, it is one of the last places in Britian to be lit by gas lamps and often used in TV costume dramas. Robin Kent Architecture & Conservation c arried out historic research and reported on the special character and significance of all the external areas of the Inner Temple, including roads, pavements and paths, the Temple Garden and terraces, as part of advising on improving accessibility throughout the area in ways that would also preserve its historic character. The recommendations included a range of public realm improvements to help the many lawyers and visitors who live and work in this historic city centre conservation area.
