Tullibody Old Bridge originally carried the main road from Stirling to Alloa over the River Deveron and is believed to have been constructed by Robert Spittal of Stirling in the early 16th century. The E arch was demolished by Kirkaldy of Grange in 1559 to prevent a French army crossing it, and Tobias Bauchop inserted iron ties in 1697. After it was replaced by an early 20th century metal bridge, it fell out of use and suffered 'long years of neglect' according to a government report in 1957. Extensive repairs were carried out in 1961, unfortunately using cement based mortars which caused acccelerated decay of the structure. After our conservation audit of the bridge, which included archival research to establish its significance, urgent repairs were carried out and it is now back in use as part of the local cycle network.
