Medieval Abbey Gatehouse
Only the early 15th century gatehouse of this abbey survives from an important Premonstratensian foundation of 1147, the rest of the precinct and surrounding wall having been progressively demolished since its suppression in 1553. The gatehouse remains one of the most impressive medieval abbey gatehouses in Britain, but remains neglected and is only used by local scouts. Following preparation of a conservation report, Robin Kent Architecture & Conservation prepared a feasibility study for possible future use as a unique holiday cottage. The study included obtaining a specialist structural assessment and budget costs for a range of conservation and repair works, as well as meetings and negotiations with the local authority and English Heritage. We also reported on the nearby well house. Sustainable use is invariably the key to the long term preservation of historic buildings.
