The Old Smiddy

Smiddy extension with terne coated steel roof replacing shoeing shed, and cedar boarded walls

This large village smithy is Category B listed but was disused and falling into disrepair, while the adjacent blacksmith's cottage urgently needed upgrading to cater for modern living. We obtained planning permission and listed building consent for several alternatve designs over a number of years, including altering and extending the cottage to link with the smithy, and extending and converting the smithy to form a separate house. Our design for the new house includes restoring the shoeing shed in a modern idiom which preserves the historic character and value of the original smithy (see above).
