Alnmouth Conservation AreaThe picturesque seaside town of Alnmouth, set on a gravel headland jutting into the mouth of the River Aln on the Northumberland coast, is a familiar sight to many tourists and travellers, and one of the high points of journeys on the East coast main railway line. Prior to a storm on Christmas Day 1806, when the river changed its course, the town included the churchyard, now cut off on the other side of the estuary. An historic grain port that once even rivalled Newcastle, it is now a quiet holiday resort. The conservation area appraisal of Alnmouth conservation area carried out by Robin Kent Architecture & Conservation included historical research to identify its important medieval burgage plot layout, shown on 16 century estate maps and still reflected by boundary walls and allotments, and townscape analysis to characterise the wide range of building styles, colours and materials typical of a seaside town. The appraisal has helped to preserve and enhance the relaxed atmosphere which draws holiday makers and tourists to the town and its beaches.
