Alnmouth seen from the coastal railway line and road is exceptionally attractive

The seaside resort of Alnmouth, set on a gravel headland jutting into the mouth of the River Aln, is a familiar sight to many travellers and one of the high points of journeys on the east coat main railway line. Our report on the conservation area included historical research to identify its medieval burgage plot layout, still reflected in boundary walls and allotments. Prior to a storm on Christmas Day 1806, when the river changed its course, the town continued to the churchyard now on the other side of the estuary. An historic grain port that once rivalled Newcastle, it is now a quiet holiday resort with a wide range of building styles, colours and materials reflecting the relaxed seaside atmosphere.
