Alnwick Conservation Area

Northumberland Hall with buttermarket beneath, one of the central features of the town

Alnwick is said to be one of the most pleasant places to live in England. An attractive historic market town and regional centre, much of its medieval plan survives and many of its fine buildings date from the 18th century.

Our appraisal of the large Alnwick conservation area included researching the history and development of the town and identified several distinct character sub-areas, each with special historical and townscape characteristics. We also pinpointed buildings at risk and made detailed recommendations for streetscape improvements, conservation area boundary changes and further surveys, to enhance the character and appearance of the town and the enjoyment of residents and visitors.
