Felton Conservation Area

Felton viewed over the medieval bridge

Felton is a large village on the original Great North Road, at the important historic crossing point of the River Coquet. In 1827 the scenery around Felton was described as 'beautifully romantic: fine rocks and hanging woods form the margins of the winding river, whilst on every side lies a rich and hightly cultivated country.' This is still true of the area today, and part of the reason local residents appreciate living here.

Our character appraisal of Felton conservation area reinforced the design statement produced by local people, who were consulted as part of the process. Our researched recommendations included improving management and revising boundaries to ensure that the special environmental qualities of the area can continue to be protected and enhanced for the benefit of all.
