Typical cottages at the entrance of the main street

The hamlet of Newton on the Moor, an historic centre for lime burning, has grown little since it was established as a borough in 1249, though most of the houses date from the 18th and 19th centuries. Our conservation area appraisal of each part of the village included historical research and assessments of setting, townscape and built form, key buildings, green spaces and trees, materials and colours, and special details, and views in and out in the usual way. We also made management recommendations including specific recommendations for negative and neutral areas, listed buildings and boundary changes, and advised in presentation and consultations.

The Reading Room was originally 2-storey
