Neo-Classical Mansion

The south facade, where we designed new stairs

This fine Neo-Classical mansion was designed in 1822 by the notable Scottish architect, James Gillespie Graham.

Robin Kent Architecture & Conservation was appointed by new owners to design a number of improvements to restore the character and appearance of the mansion, as part of thoroughly upgrading it to modern standards of comfort and convenience. The work included historic research so that disfiguring later alterations could be removed, and fireplaces and rooflights restored. Drawings were prepared to guide the works, and surveys of the windows, masonry, dampness and drainage, and chimney flues carried out to inform a minimum intervention approach to the repairs, based on understanding the traditional construction and materials. In a continuing relationship, consents were obtained for a number of internal alterations including new doors, bookcases, radiator boxes and a new fanlight over the main entrance, all specially designed to harmonise with the restored Georgian interiors. Externally, approvals were gained for a new staircase to the garden, garages, gates and steps designed by the consultancy.
