Haggerston Castle
The stable courtyard of Haggerston Castle, rebuilt in 1908 and possibly one of the last designs of the important Arts and Crafts architect Richard Norman Shaw, is the most complete surviving part of the historic estate buildings. The castle, founded in the 13th century, was demolished in 1931-2 and replaced by a modern leisure complex. We carried out historic research and site inspections and prepared a conservation report to ensure that the stables' historic features can be preserved and make a positive contribution in its redevelopment as a modern health spa, a new use that will ensure its survival and also allow guests to appreciate the fine accommodation previously enjoyed by the horses!
