The stable courtyard of Haggerston Castle, rebuilt in 1908 and possibly one of the last designs of the important Arts and Crafts architect Richard Norman Shaw, is the most complete surviving part of the historic estate buildings. The Castle, founded in the 13th century, was demolished in 1931-2 and replaced by a modern leisure complex. We carried out archival research and inspections and prepared an appraisal to ensure that the stables' historic features can be preserved and make a positive contribution in its redevelopment as a health spa, a new use that will ensure its survival.
