Central Kirkintilloch Conservation Area

Cowgate

The town of Kirkintilloch lies to the north east of the Clydeside conurbation; once an industrial town serving the Glasgow / Lanarkshire coal and iron fields, it was also an important central point on the Forth and Clyde canal with boatbuilding yards producing the famous 'Kirky Puffers'. Its historic roots stretch back as far as the Roman period, when it was a strategic site on the line of the Antonine Wall, and its tourist interest has recently been enhanced by inclusion of the Wall in the list of World Heritage Sites.

Our conservation area character appraisal included historic archival research and identified no less than 5 different townscape character sub-areas. Boundary changes were recommended to integrate these and ensure that the conservation area could be enhanced, paving the way for informed town-centre regeneration.
