Walkerburn Parish Church

The church from the road

This historic parish church, constructed by a wealthy Scottish mill owner for his workers in 1875 and extended to provide a chancel and transepts in 1891, has recently become redundant. Possible future uses include a conference venue-cum-hostel.

Our archival historic research into the origins and development of the building led to the discovery of the name of the original architect, raising its heritage value. We prepared a statement of significance and a summary of condition and threats, and made recommendations to guide future alterations. Important features identified included the stained glass windows commemorating members of the mill owners' family, one of which was a rare and beautiful Percy Bacon Brothers' window (see below -3rd from left).

Understanding heritage assets is the key to preserving and enhancing them, and can enrich and add to the interest of new uses.
