Research

Almost all our projects include an element of historic research, including archival historic research into the orgins and development of historic buildings and sites, evaluations and assesments of significance, and conservation plans and statements. We have also prepared 'biographies' of a variety of buildings, ranging from a small terraced workers' cottage to a country house hotel.

As qualified architectural historians and buildings archaeologists as well as architects and designers, we believe that properly informed, research-based understanding is essential for an informed conservation approach and the basis of innovative design. In addition to revealing the value and potential of heritage assets, we often find that such research supports proposed changes and can even at times prompt innovative new approaches.

We are also keen to ensure that our design work is informed by the latest technical research findings. Working alongside other specialists and scientists, we have contributed to published conservation research on a wide range of issues affecting historic buildings and sites.

We have delivered tailored training to local authorities and contributed to university courses, delivered lectures to professional institutions, conferences and seminars, and have been involved in technical publications and other educational initiatives aimed at raising conservation and design standards.
