The TabernacleThe book of Exodus contains the oldest building specification known, for a bronze age portable temple called the Tabernacle. We have spent many years researching this key historic text and the accompanying descriptions of the fabrication, construction and use of the Tabernacle. Claiming to have been designed by God, the Tabernacle is a uniquely authentic expression of ancient architecture, which has important artistic, symbolic and spiritual messages that are still relevant to architects today.
We are have a professional interest in several other biblical areas, including creation and the garden of Eden: Our interest in creation science originally derived from questions about the historical validity of the theory of evolution and a growing conviction that special creation provides a more rationally satisfying view of origins. The implications of creation for architects and artists include respect, responsibility, relationship, sustainability, craftsmanship and the use of natural materials and forms, among other key themes. Historically proposed as the origin of architecture, the garden of Eden contains fascinating insights into the meaning of enclosure and access, order and symmetry, shelter, spatial articulation, and the relationship of people and places. We have a continuing research interest in the garden as a seminal architectural expression with deep symbolic and spiritual significance, the history of ancient architecture, vernacular building and the development of building materials and techniques. |
